Streets, Roads and Highway Anti-Icing/De-Icing and PreWetting
Spray vehicle speeds range from 1-60 mph, a 6000% difference. Fixed orifice nozzles adjust only within a small faction of this enormous range.
With the factory calibrated nozzles, there are no over- or under - application problems. No longer will accidents be caused by excessive slippery chemicals left on the roadway.
Slow-moving spray trucks will not be enveloped in a cloud of spray, tempting drivers to use risky passing behaviors. O-Nozzles spray backwards from the fast moving truck, thus cancelling its forward motion. The Zero Velocity solid streams fall gently to the road without atomizing or fogging. Other cars on the road will not have their visibility reduced while spraying occurs.
For Prewetting, it is now possible to accurately control pre-wet rates to precisely match salt spreading rates. Without the O-Nozzle, prewetting is erratic. Salt becomes too wet at low speeds and is poorly wetted at high speeds.

Dust and Erosion Control for Roads and Highway Shoulders
Frequent and intensive spraying is often needed to reduce pollution from dust under new air quality standards. Precise liquid metering at any speed with O-Nozzles lets crews finish jobs more quickly, cover more miles per day. If desired, very high GPLM rates can be achieved.
Airport Anti-Icing /De-Icing
The new O-Nozzle is ideally suited for runways, taxiways, ramps and parking lots. O-Nozzles produce cohesive solid streams of de-icer that cover wide areas. O-Nozzle systems are designed for high speed spraying, minimizing airport operations downtime.
One airport manager reports that his new O-Nozzle spray truck is able to finish runway de-icing and park back in the same amount of time it took his earlier multi-boom system to unfold, set up and get into position, ready to spray.

Soil Compaction and Ground Stabilization for Gravel Roads
Building a road is a layer-by-layer process with accurate application of liquid binding agents needed to meet highway engineering specifications. Sprayer speeds vary widely, requiring uniform output at all times. Sprayers with O-Nozzles get the job done faster while consistently spraying at exact rates.
Problems with fixed orifice nozzles:
Low Speed Problems
At low speeds they don’t maintain the spray pattern. As you approach or leave a stop sign, they dribble and drip. Typically the sprayer must be traveling at 10 mph or more before the spray pattern fills out and goes where you want it.
Danger of Ground Speed Override
Some machines try to get around this problem by having the electronic controller call for a constant spray volume from 15 mph or so all the way down to 1 mph to produce a uniform spray pattern. Unfortunately, this means that the slower the truck goes, the greater the excessive flow becomes. For example, at 1 mph it is spraying 15 times too much.
When this happens, the road becomes slippery and dangerous, especially at intersections. This feature also wastes material.
High Speed Problems
At high speeds, the fixed orifice becomes a choke point and won’t pass the necessary volume called for when traveling on the highway. Depending on the hole size in the old fashioned nozzles, the spray coming out may be only half of what is needed. So highways will be dangerous and slippery because they lack enough treatment to successfully melt the snow and ice.
Traffic Disruptions
Another problem is caused by the sprayer traveling at high speeds, creating a great cloud of fog and spray when anti-icing or de-icing, which seriously disrupts traffic.

Spratronics O-Nozzle Advantages
Variable Orifice O-Nozzles from Spratronics:
Great Results!
Without the new Variable Orifice O-Nozzles, it’s impossible to get good results. With them, snow and ice melting will improve, you will re-spray less, your operating costs will be lower and accident rates will be reduced.
- The nozzle opening size changes automatically as needed.
- You get the exact spray rate you want for any speed or application rate.
- The nozzle won’t drip when the sprayer stops.
- You get zero velocity spraying which means the spray stream goes where you want without fogging or misting. This makes spraying much safer for other drivers.
